IP vs Analog CCTV: Which is Right for You?

IP vs Analog CCTV: Which is Right for You?

Overview

When planning a surveillance setup, the most common question is: IP or Analog? Both technologies are reliable, but they serve different use cases. Here is a detailed comparison to help you decide.

Resolution

IP cameras typically offer 2MP to 8MP (4K) resolution, delivering crisp, detailed footage. Analog HD (AHD/TVI/CVI) cameras offer 1MP to 5MP resolution — perfectly adequate for most small to medium installations.

Cabling

IP cameras use Cat5e/Cat6 network cable and can be powered over the same cable via PoE (Power over Ethernet), simplifying installation.

Analog cameras use coaxial cable for video and a separate power cable. If you are upgrading an existing analog system, you can often reuse the existing coaxial cable.

Cost

Analog systems are generally more affordable upfront. IP systems cost more but offer better scalability and remote access features.

Remote Access

Both systems support remote viewing via mobile apps (Hik-Connect, DMSS, etc.), but IP systems offer more advanced features such as AI-based motion detection, facial recognition, and cloud storage.

Our Recommendation

  • Small home or shop (4–8 cameras, budget-conscious): Analog HD system
  • Office, warehouse, or multi-storey building: IP camera system
  • High-security or large premises: IP system with AI features
